What are Dermal Fillers?

Taking care of your skin is something everybody should consider throughout their life.  Even from a young age, if you neglect your skin, you could potentially have issues later on in life.  Dermal fillers are just one of many treatments you can choose to bring your skin back to life.  Not everybody will know what dermal fillers are, the benefits and how the procedure works.  In this article, we are going to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a series of injections containing hyaluronic acid.  The acid stores moisture and is what makes your skin plump and glow. Although you can take hyaluronic acid topically, when it is injected directly into the skin, the acid will restore loss of volume and hydration that is lost from collagen and elastin that occurs with age.

Where can I have the Dermal Filler injections?

You can have the dermal filler injections on different parts of your face. It depends on where the troubled area is as to where you receive the treatment. It may be under your eyes, the cheeks or your mouth. It isn’t just your face that can have the injections, you may also decide on the neck, chest or hands.

Does Dermal Filler treatment hurt?

Everybody has a different pain threshold, so it is difficult to say what one person finds as a little discomfort, another may not feel a thing.  With that said, fine microneedles are used, which generally means the procedure is pain-free. Some patients may choose a numbing cream as a precaution.  The treatment only takes a few minutes, so any slight discomfort will soon be over. Once the dermal fillers have been injected, the areas are barely noticeable, which means you can go about your day as normal.

How long does it take until I see results?

How long before you see results from dermal fillers will vary from person to person.  It also depends on how your body will react to the hyaluronic acid. Generally, you will notice results between 6 and 18 months.

Are there any risks involved?

No medical procedure or aesthetic treatment comes without some kind of risk.  So long as you have the dermal fillers carried out in a clinical environment, and the staff are medically trained, you will be in safe hands. During the consultation, you will be able to ask any questions you may have.  If you are concerned about possible risks, the consultant will be able to answer any query to put your mind at ease.

What type of skin conditions will benefit from dermal fillers?

Several common skin conditions can be improved by using dermal fillers.

  • Acne scarring
  • Pockmarks and depressions as a result of previous injury or illness
  • Uneven skin after a medical procedure such as skin grafting
  • Smile/Laughter lines running from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth
